From Farm to Table: Logistics Challenges and Opportunities in the Philippines

Reuben “Beng” S.J. Pangan, President, Air21. Introduces the concepts of Demand Chain and Virtual Chain which are steps further to the traditional Supply Chain. He provides an overview of consumer spending showing that 30% of a typical middle class salary is allocated as a discretionary fund. Moreover, he inlightens the audience on the phenomenal increase in internet and mobile usage. Last mile, trucking, warehousing, inventory management are only part of the full suite of services needed today. However, he argues that food logistics have remained unchanged for the past 15 years, hindered by 7 layers of middlemen, resulting in 27% of cost of food goin to logistics, and a 30% spoilage. Technologies are being introduced to address this, such as: multi-temperature facilities which are provide dry, chilled, and frozen storages in agricultural terminals. Beng lists the problems that the young engineers will solve in the years to come and challenges the students to “stay where you are”.

Beng has been in the logistics industry for more than 10 years collectively. He started as sales manager for Airfreight 2100 Inc. in the 1990’s and occupied several positions over the years. In 2003 he launched the AIR21 brand which is now one of the biggest names in express delivery in the country today. It was recently awarded the 2017 Digital transformation Leader for Operational Transformation in the Philippines by The International Data Corporation (IDC). Beng was also a veteran of the telcom industry for 18 years having been appointed as Head of Customer Service for all 3 major telco brands…Globe, Smart and Sun Cellular.

About the 2018 IEmagineering Conference
How Do We Feed One Hundred Million?
IEmagineering Systems for Food Security
April 21, 2018 (Saturday) | National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

This symposium hopes to start a conversation on challenges, limitations, threats and solutions to a critical issue that our nation faces: food insecurity. Both the government and the private sector have developed technologies and solutions to the many components affecting this issue: sourcing and funding, logistics, storage, production, retail and distribution. However, we believe that an integrated approach is required to initiate sustained programs that will ensure continued access to nutritious and affordable food for 100,000,000 Filipinos.

We propose that the application of IE principles and systems thinking is key to viewing national food security holistically–to better grasp its dimensions, and then to be able to design, plan and propose multi-sectoral strategies, as solid steps towards nation-building.  We hope to spark the participant’s imagination by presenting innovative and pioneering solutions and open their young minds to the idea that there are many career and business opportunities for Industrial Engineers in this area.
