Tuparin and pangarap!

After applications and interviews, 4 IE students were selected as grantees of UPIEAA’s Achievers Program for Academic Year 2018-19.  Let’s get to know them!

Princess E. Petallo, 12/9/97; 5th year student; from San Mateo, Rizal
“Upon completing my degree, I see myself working in a field related to production systems, most likely in the supply chain field. I also aspire to become a social entrepreneur and build my own company. I want to use what I have learned and will learn in my degree to help others.”

Anicia L. Chan, 6/14/97; 5th year student; from Quezon City
“After graduating, I see myself taking small steps for my career. I hope to work for an organisation with a role related to production systems. I also want to return to my department a few years after by pursuing a teaching career.”

Samantha Kaye C. Vergara, 2/3/98; 5th year student; from Dasmariñas, Cavite
“After finishing my degree, I hope to make a bright future for myself and for others. I envision, that by being an Industrial Engineer, I would be helping people and organisations to constantly be better. And I aim to pursue further studies for me to gain more knowledge in my field of work.”

Joniel Christopher P. Ferrer, 9/16/96; 4th year student; from San Pedro, Laguna
“Upon completing my degree, I want to pursue a master’s degree on ergonomics or industrial quality control, and I am hopeful to publish some research and further studies. After completion of my master’s program, I am looking forward to work in a hospital and share my IE knowledge to improve systems and services.”

So what does it take to help these bright young minds fulfill their aspirations? Well, considering the impact that IEs have on nation-building, not much.

The Achievers Program provides a monthly stipend of P5,000 to financially-challenged students. Though tuition is 100% subsidised, students need to defray other living expenses such as dorm rent, meals, transpo, load, and photocopying. Many of the applicants face other adverse struggles such as medical/hospital bills (involving either parents or the students themselves) or absence of family income. Many have resorted to part-time work, affect their studies. Learn how you can help HERE.

The students were officially introduced to the UPIEAA Board last August 27th at the new IE/ME building.

“How we wish we could support all the applicants,” says Jop Yap, UPIEAA Scholarship Committee Head. “but because of limited resources, we needed to prioritise. Fortunately there are other programs, such as UP Alumni Engineers’ (UPAE) SNPL Program, to where we refer those we can’t support.”  Yap, who was honored as one of the 100 outstanding alumni of the UP Diliman College of Engineering as part of its Centennial celebration,  is also serving as Trustee for UPAE.

More on UPAE’s SNPL Program

The Study Now Pay Later (SNPL) program provides a student loan of P60,000 per school year available to incoming third year students and up at the UPD College of Engineering (COE).

The grantee receives the amount for up to three years or graduation (whichever comes first), bringing the total loan of up to P180,000. The loan becomes due and payable – three years after the student graduates or one year after gainful employment, whichever is earlier -without interest and at the same schedule that the loan was received. This repayment will fund the next set of deserving students availing the Study Now Pay Later Program.
