UPIEAA and Batch 77 Says Goodbye to Prof. Rañeses

Posted on: Nov 2, 2019

Below is an excerpt of the eulogy delivered by UPIEAA’s Elise Del Rosario during the necrological services for Prof. Rañeses last October 8, 2019.

I am here to represent the UPIEAA- I am representing both the UPIEAA President Ricky Peña who is currently indisposed and Batch 77, to which Nes belongs. Our batch was kept appraised of Nes’s condition soon after we learned of the diagnosis. Prayers, expressions of concern and suggestions for possible cures kept pouring in to our Chat group. I made my way to Medical City an hour after Nes passed. He was still in his hospital bed. In a way, I thought our batch was able to say goodbye to him.

I think it is fair to say that our Batch – Batch 77, has produced a lot of alumni who made a mark in their chosen fields. Of course, prime example is Nes. He has chosen to dedicate himself to educating future IEs while at the same time, honing his own expertise. My husband Bing and I were present at the colloquium where he presented his paper and we got to conversing after, on experiences at Georgia Tech, where my 2 children got their Bachelor’s degrees and where Nes got his Masters. Indeed, Nes has chosen a path of academic excellence and service.

Tonight, it is our privilege to present him with the award that was supposed to be presented to him on October 19, during the 2019 Homecoming of the UPIEAA. This citation was read to him hours before he passed. The Citation reads:

The UPIEAA 2019 bestows the award to Professor Nestor O. Rañeses† for his significant contribution to Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, College of Engineering, Institute for Small-Scale Industries, and the University of the Philippines System as Professor, Department Chair, Director and Assistant Vice-President for Administration during his many years of service to the University. He also provided expertise to the Department of Trade and Industry in the policy-making on the Philippine accreditation of national product standards, conformity assessment system standards and national quality infrastructure laboratories. Through his various training and learning programs covering different areas of the IE profession, he ably assisted both the public and private sectors in their quest for operational excellence.
